Vietnam to issue 1 year visas for US passport holders in May 2016

The National Assembly of Vietnam has just approved a plan on issuing 12 months multiple entries visa for US passport holders who travel for short-term tourism or business purpose.

According to media release by U.S. Embassy in Hanoi on 11th April, the new reciprocity arrangement is expected to enter into force in late May or early June. So U.S. citizens will have to wait for about 1.5 months to be able to get a new, longer-duration visa. The new visa rule will be able to benefit American and Vietnamese tourists and business travelers, generating new opportunities for trade, investment and tourism.

Accordingly, Vietnam will grant visa with the maximum period of 1 year multiple entries for American citizens who travel for short term tourism or business purpose and who otherwise meet the requirements to enter Vietnam. Tourist and business travelers would still have all of the other options available to them and could select the best choice depending upon their needs and of course the fees would change accordingly.

In the past, the maximum validity for Vietnam visa issued for these purposes are 3 months. In most cases, only single entry is issued. In contrast, the US continues to issue multiple-entry visas valid up to one year to Vietnamese citizens entering the US temporarily for business (B-1) or tourism (B-2).

In principle, while the US and Vietnam issue maximum validity visas to each other’s citizens, each side may limit visa validity and entry times for individual applicants on a case-by-case basis in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
